Why Flying Can Make Your Ears Feel Blocked

Your middle ear contains a small pocket of air behind the eardrum. The Eustachian tube connects that space to the back of your nose. It opens briefly when you swallow, yawn or chew.

During takeoff, cabin pressure drops as the plane climbs. During landing, it rises again as the plane descends. Your ears must adjust quickly to keep pressure balanced on both sides of the eardrum.

When the Eustachian tube does not open fast enough, pressure builds behind or in front of the eardrum. That difference can cause fullness, popping or muffled hearing. Descent often feels worse because outside pressure increases before the middle ear can catch up.

A cold, allergies or sinus inflammation can narrow the Eustachian tube. This makes pressure harder to release during a flight. Dry cabin air may also leave the nose and throat irritated, especially during longer trips.

Signs That Ear Pressure Has Become Barotrauma

Normal ear popping usually settles once the pressure equalizes. Ear barotrauma develops when the pressure difference places too much strain on the eardrum. The tissue may stretch inward or outward instead of moving normally.

Pain is often the clearest warning sign, especially during descent. Hearing may sound dull because the eardrum cannot vibrate freely. Some travelers also notice ringing, dizziness or a stronger sense of pressure in one ear.

More severe pressure changes can cause fluid or small amounts of blood to collect behind the eardrum. In rare cases, the eardrum may tear. Sudden sharp pain followed by drainage or a major hearing change needs medical attention.

Symptoms that continue after landing should not be dismissed as routine popping. Persistent pain, dizziness or muffled hearing may mean the ear has not recovered. An ENT specialist can check the eardrum and middle ear for injury.

How to Equalize Ear Pressure During Descent

Your ears usually feel it most as the plane’s coming down, so don’t wait around for the pain to kick in.

Start doing your pressure tricks early, before things get uncomfortable. And try to stay awake during descent, that way you catch it as soon as it starts instead of waking up with your ears already blocked.

Several methods can encourage the Eustachian tubes to open. Use gentle movements and stop if any technique causes sharp pain.

  • Swallow often, yawn deliberately or chew gum during descent.
  • Sip water regularly to create repeated swallowing movements.
  • Pinch your nose and blow very gently with your mouth closed.
  • Wear filtered flight earplugs to slow the pressure change.
  • Use a decongestant only when your healthcare provider says it is safe.

Do not force your ears to pop by blowing hard. Too much pressure can strain the eardrum instead of helping it adjust. Stop and seek medical guidance if severe pain, dizziness or hearing changes develop.

Why Cabin Air Can Dry Out Your Nose and Throat

Indianapolis travelers are used to humidity that shifts throughout Indiana’s seasons. Cabin air is much drier, which can quickly affect the nose, mouth and throat. The longer the flight, the more noticeable that irritation may become.

Low humidity pulls moisture from the tissues lining your respiratory tract. Your nose may feel blocked even when congestion is not causing the problem. You may also develop a scratchy throat, dry cough, cracked lips or a mild nosebleed.

Drinking water throughout the flight can replace some of the moisture your body loses. Lozenges or sugar-free candy may also keep your mouth and throat from feeling as dry. Try to limit alcohol and excessive caffeine, since both may leave you feeling more dehydrated.

Saline nasal spray can add moisture without the rebound congestion associated with medicated sprays. Travelers with allergies or sinus trouble may find it especially useful during longer flights. Follow the label and avoid sharing nasal products with anyone else.

How Internal and Topical Hydration Work Differently

Drinking water helps your whole body stay hydrated, but it won’t do much for dry nasal tissue directly. That’s why your nose can still feel raw on a long flight even if you’ve been drinking plenty. Hydrating from the inside and moisturizing from the outside are just two different jobs.

Bring water with you and drink it as you go. Waiting until you feel thirsty usually means you are already playing catch-up. A refillable bottle is also much easier than relying on the tiny cups handed out during the flight.

Saline sprays and nasal gels handle the other side of things, working right on the lining of your nose. A spray gives quick, light relief, while a gel sticks around longer if you’re prone to cracking or nosebleeds. Just make sure you’re using something made for nasal use and stick to the directions on the label.

Coffee, tea and alcohol do not need to be avoided completely. However, relying on them instead of water may leave you feeling drier. Pairing them with water helps maintain a steadier intake during the trip.

Reducing Your Exposure to Germs During a Flight

Air travel places many people in close quarters for several hours. Germs can spread through respiratory droplets and contaminated surfaces. Touching your eyes, nose or mouth can then give those germs an entry point.

Wash your hands with soap and water when you have the chance. Hand sanitizer is useful before eating or after touching tray tables, armrests and other shared surfaces. Make sure your hands are clean before adjusting contact lenses or using nasal spray.

Tray tables, seat controls and touchscreens are handled by many travelers. Wiping these areas before use may reduce what transfers to your hands. Avoid placing food directly on the tray table.

Try to keep your hands away from your face during the flight. Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your elbow rather than your hand. These habits reduce exposure without requiring you to avoid normal movement around the cabin.

Preparing to Fly During Allergy Season

Allergy symptoms can become harder to manage once you are seated on a plane. Dust in fabric seats and other airborne irritants may trigger sneezing, itching or congestion. Dry nasal tissue can also react more strongly during the flight.

Keep your regular allergy medication in your carry-on instead of checked luggage. Take it early enough to begin working before boarding, based on the directions you were given. Check whether it causes drowsiness before relying on it during travel.

A well-fitting mask may help if airborne allergens often bother you. Pack tissues, eye drops and any prescribed medication where you can reach them easily. Keeping these items nearby makes it easier to respond before symptoms become distracting.

Avoid trying a new allergy medication for the first time on travel day. You may not know how well it works or how it affects you. Planning ahead gives you more control before you enter the cabin.

When a Cold or Sinus Infection Makes Flying Risky

A slightly runny nose may not affect your flight much. The bigger concern is heavy congestion, which can block the pathways your ears and sinuses use to release pressure. When that happens, the changing cabin pressure has nowhere to go.

During descent, the pressure difference can pull on the eardrum and cause sharp pain, muffled hearing or temporary hearing loss. Severely blocked sinuses may also cause intense facial pressure or pain. In some cases, the pressure can injure the sinus lining or rupture the eardrum.

It may be safer to postpone flying if your nose is completely blocked or you already have significant ear or sinus pain. Fever, an active ear infection or recent ear surgery also deserve medical guidance before travel.

These conditions can make pressure changes harder for the ears and sinuses to handle.

Seek medical care after the flight if you notice drainage from the ear, sudden hearing loss, severe dizziness or pain that does not improve.
